A Domain Ownership Checklist for Small Businesses
Know who can renew the domain, change DNS, recover account access, and authorize a provider transfer.
Verify account control
Confirm the registrar, account owner, renewal date, payment method, and recovery contact. The business should be able to reach the account even when a web provider or employee is no longer involved.
Use multi-factor authentication and a business-controlled recovery email. Do not send passwords or one-time codes through ordinary email or a public chat.
- Keep account recovery under business control.
- Track renewal dates.
- Use secure access methods.
Understand DNS and transfer steps
Know who can edit DNS records, what services those records support, and how a change will be tested. A domain transfer can affect website and email routing if records are not documented.
Ask the provider to explain the transfer process before work begins. Keep a current list of services connected to the domain and verify them after any change.
- Document important DNS dependencies.
- Plan transfers before an urgent change.
- Verify the website and email after DNS updates.
