Why Search Console Says a Sitemap Has Errors

Check the sitemap URL, response type, XML syntax, and listed page statuses when Search Console reports a format error.

Make sure the submitted URL is XML

A sitemap should return XML in a supported sitemap format, not an HTML page such as the website homepage or a sign-in screen. Open the submitted URL directly and confirm the response starts with valid sitemap markup.

Check that the hosting route serves the sitemap file directly and that a catch-all rewrite is not returning the app shell instead. A browser rendering the page attractively does not prove that the response is XML.

  • Open the exact submitted sitemap URL.
  • Check raw response content and content type.
  • Confirm rewrites do not replace XML with HTML.

Validate URLs and submit again after correction

Check XML syntax, canonical host, and whether listed URLs return the expected page. Remove malformed, redirected, blocked, or duplicate entries when appropriate.

After fixing the underlying issue, resubmit in Search Console and wait for processing. If the sitemap can be read but a page is not indexed, inspect the page separately.

  • Validate file syntax and URL status.
  • Use one canonical host consistently.
  • Distinguish sitemap errors from page indexing decisions.
